Acne Antibiotics and You
If I say acne antibiotics what’s the first word that comes to mind?
Is it Accutane?
I’m sure it was. Accutane is the most popular antibiotic. But there are others too.
In this section of facial acne treatment, we’ll explore the different types of acne antibiotics. Such as:
- Accutane
- Tretinoin (Retin A)
- Antibiotic Creams
Let’s begin.
Accutane Drugs. Are these Acne Antibiotics right for you?

What do you think about Accutane?
Do you trust it or are you afraid to try it?
Now I know there’s a lot of confusion about this drug. So I’ll provide some info about that may help you make up your mind.
Would that help?
Great, here we go.
The first thing to know is Accutane has been the most reliable drug in acne treatment.
Here’s what it does.
These acne antibiotcs prevent pores from clogging, shrink the sebaceous glands and reduce sebum. In other words it reverses the entire acne process.
Accutane is so effective that studies have shown that it reduces acne in 90% of patients.
So why is it so dreaded?
It’s feared because of its side effects.
Accutane users complain of minor side effects like dry skin, nosebleeds, headaches as well as joint and muscle pain.
But the major side effects are dangerous...They are birth defects, depression and even suicide.
So what do I think about this acne medication?
I believe it should be used but as a last resort. Only if you suffer from hormonal acne and nothing else is working, then maybe you can give Accutane a try.
I also believe that women in their child-bearing years should stay away from the drug.

Although you may not be pregnant right now there is evidence to show that it can affect your unborn child later on when you are.
Here’s a sad but true story about Accutane Acne Antibiotics and Birth Defects
There was a recent case where a young woman stopped using Accutane several months before she was conceived. However, her baby became brained damaged while still in her womb.
Finally if you do decide to take this antibiotic, check up on your liver regularly. Remember the role our livers play in hormonal acne?
Well here’s a reminder. An inefficient working liver isn’t able to get rid of extra hormones in our bodies so we breakout.
Well Accutane increases the work rate of our livers. That’s why it’s good for hormonal acne. So just to be safe we can check on our liver regularly.
Alright, I hope you can now make up your minds about Accutane.
Now let’s move.
Tretinoin (Rentin A)
Tretinoins are topical acne antibiotics. They are very effective in moderate acne cases.
Here’s what they do.
They help keep our pores from becoming clogged by increasing our natural exfoliation rate. That is the natural rate at which dead surface skin is shed.
Like Accutane drugs, Tretinoin acne antibiotics should not be used during pregnancy.
Also it may make our skin extremely sensitive to sun light.
Because this topical acne treatment is new, we can’t tell for sure its long-term effects. So consult your doctor or dermatologist to find out if Retin A is for you.
Acne Antibiotics in Creams
Antibiotic creams such as tetracycline, erythromycin or clindamycin can also be prescribed to treat acne. But if these drugs don’t work ask your doctor or dermatologist about minocycline.
The main purpose of these creams is to kill the P. acnes when they are rubbed on the affected areas of our faces.
But like other antibiotics there are side effects we should be aware of.
Side effects like shortness of breath and joint pains are common. Another is yeast infections. Some people have been known to experience yeast infections after using these creams.
We should also be aware that these antibiotics can kill “friendly” bacteria along with harmful bacteria.
So there you go.
